As an *elder... oof... millenial, I grew up with point &amp; shoot film cameras until digital photography rocked our little worlds in the late 90's. The joy of shooting my little roll of drugstore film and then dropping it in the bin (at that same drugstore) to be sent to the lab was unmatched. Then we'd wait a week until the phone call came in "your photos are ready" and we'd go pick up a happy packet of prints. Half the images were a mess, out of focus, blown-out by flash, too dark... but it didn't matter. Every frame had value. Of course digital took over and it seemed silly to spend all that time and money on film when we could have instant gratification, but the allure of traditional film never left me. I picked up a Pentax k1000 about 8 years ago and I instantely was transported back to the excitement and anticipation I felt as a kid. I've been photographing my family on film for years and have thrown a roll into a wedding or session here and there, but the pandemic made it really difficult to get a hold of certain film stocks. Supply chains were a mess (we all know this) so I stopped bringing my analog gear along to shoots with me. I even sold my medium format camera (so much regret) and paused my film joy. Time passed and things started to settle down so I dusted off my gear and began adding film to sessions &amp; weddings again - this time as an option for my clients, not just for my own fun. I even re-purchased that same Pentax 645n that I sold in what can only be described as a momentary blackout. Let me tell ya... it feels GOOD to be back!!! 
I needed to run a test roll through the camera I'd snagged online so I put out a model call for an all film session here in Oshawa. Andrea and Ryan answered that call and boy am I ever thankful they did.

On what turned out to be a frigid &amp; windy day, we hit the beach painted with beautiful neutral tones that only early spring could provide. The wind can be annoying, but the way it tousles hair and adds movement always makes things feel all the more organic and real. The sun may not have graced us until the last 3 frames of the session but even in the overcast light Andrea &amp; Ryan shone brightly.

As we wrapped up the session, I had that momentary panicked feeling that every film photographer gets "what if none of these turn out?" but I didn't need to worry. Kodak Portra 400, my gear, my experience, and my kick-ass lab (shoutout <a href="https://www.allthingsfilm.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AllThingsFilm</a>) had my back and I'm thrilled with the final images. Windy Beach Couple's Session on Film

Planning for a family session can feel overwhelming for parents and caregivers. While sessions with me are meant to be fun-filled and child-led, I understand that the thought of getting everyone clean, clothed, and happy can be daunting. As a parent myself, I know there's a strong desire for your kids to "behave" and for things to go smoothly. It's normal to feel that way! I've been photographing families for almost 13 years now and while my style has shifted pretty dramatically from more posed shots to free-flowing, play-fueled sessions, I've learned some pretty great tips that I'm going to pass on to you dear reader! Let's get into it.

Tip #1 Prepare Everyone Set the tone early and prepare your family for an adventure! If you frame your session as a boring time that they'll need to sit and fake smile through it's guaranteed to be a flop. Instead, start talking to kids early on in your planning process about all the fun we'll have on our photo adventure. Young children love to be in on the excitement so chat with them and involve them in the decision making. You can tell them all about your photographer and the cool place we're going to explore. Explain to them about how their photos might one day end up on the walls of your home and talk to them about why you feel it's special to spend this type of time together.

<h2 style="text-align: center;">Tip #2 RELAX.</h2>
 I understand that this can feel high-stakes, photos are a significant investment and you want to be sure you'll receive good photos. Here's the thing though, stress is contagious and little humans especially have their radars tuned in to how you're feeling. I encourage you to approach your session as an opportunity to play, hug, and laugh with the people you love the most in the world. Rather than an hour that you HAVE to get posed and perfectly smiling shots, instead look at it as an hour to capture what makes you special as a family. Who are your children really? Are they perfectly coiffed and dressed, always perfectly behaved? Or do they suck their thumbs and stop to pick up cool rocks? Do they sometimes hide behind you when they meet a stranger or splash in a puddle in brand new shoes? Do they have a favourite stuffie that they're determined to include in the session? RELAX - your kids aren't stock image models, they're real tiny people with big ideas &amp; big feelings. Let it be and the photos will feel more special that way, I promise.

Tip #3
Keep your cool.
 I know this sounds like the same thing as "RELAX", but actually I mean something different with this tip. When those little turkeys start acting up during your shoot... keep your cool. I guarantee you that I've seen more chaotic families than yours and as your photographer, I'm fine. Instead of getting stern and disciplining in the moment, keep calm and divert. Get them focused on something new and cool - if they've done something really rascally, save the discipline for later if necessary.

Tip #4 Get Off Your Phones This sounds like it should go without saying, but phones are a connection killer. I've seen folks hop on their devices mid-session and it's like an invisible wall pops up that separates them from the group. My sessions last about an hour and I don't feel it's unreasonable for my clients to tuck their phones away and spend 60 minutes of quality time with their partner and kids. I don't mind if you snap a quick behind-the-scenes shot and then tuck your phone in your bag, but leave the business calls, texts, emails, etc for another time. You've paid your photographer for their time, sure, but you've also paid them to capture a moment in your family's history. Help them out by being present for that.

Tip #5 Have FUN

Sounds obvious right? Just have fun, it'll be fine... sounds too easy. But seriously, this is an opportunity to document your family the way you truly are at this moment in time. When you think of what you'd like to remember 10, 20, or 30 years down the road, what do you think of? I'm not suggesting we don't take a single posed photo, we can certainly capture some of those, but I do believe that real-life interactions are art. When we let down our guards and shed some of the expectations for flawless images, I believe that's when the best photos are made. I want to see the way you chase your toddler down the beach and scoop them up while they wiggle and laugh. I want to see how you tenderly brush the hair out of your 'tween's eyes as they pretend to be annoyed. I want to capture how you glance at your partner while they watch your kids spin in circles till they fall down. Have fun, play, be there.. and the photos will be perfectly you!

5 Tips for a Great Family Photo Session with Kids

Toronto weddings are always fun, but there's something extra special about an intimate gathering in a beautiful studio space like Preto Loft. Enter Emma and Carmine's wedding, a day I was thrilled to be a part of as a photographer. This wedding actually took place a while back when we were still holding our breath to see if we'd be able to gather or not. You may recall that restrictions were changing quickly as a certain virus was wreaking havoc on our lives. Emma &amp; Carmine opted for the intimate guest list and cozy private dinner in Yorkville not just because they were gorgeous options, but because they were the safest at the time. It was a freezing cold day but the light shining into Preto Loft and the presence of close friends and family made this wedding feel so warm.

The day began at Emma and Carmine's Toronto home, where a post-workout Camine got ready with his family. Carmine was a mix of nerves and anticipation, so eager to see Emma for their first look. Emma got ready at a separate location, her eyes sparkling a little every time Carmine's name was mentioned although she seemed cool as a cucumber.

Preto Loft, their chosen venue, was a the perfect venue. The beautiful studio space was dripping in winter light and made a gorgeous space for an intimate gathering. It was so fun to watch friends &amp; family reunite for the first time after months of isolation - I'm so lucky to be given this little peek into people's lives. The unplugged ceremony was thoughtfully officiated by a friend then followed by a champagne toast &amp; some family photos. When family photos wrapped we dodged protesters to make our way to Salon Private Dining in Yorkville. The cozy dining room was packed with candles &amp; florals and smelled INCREDIBLE. Once everyone arrived it was filled with heartfelt speeches, laughter, and tears of joy.

As I photographed their day, I couldn't help but feel a sense of overwhelming gratitude and I felt it again as I went through their images to make selections for this post. Emma and Carmine, thank you for opening your hearts to me, for allowing me to be a part of your special day. A Cozy Wedding at Preto Loft: Emma and Carmine

Raise your hand if you miss summer as much as I do! I'm sitting here huddled under multiple layers with a blanket over my lap while I blog this Cherry Beach engagement session from warmer days past and counting down the days until we're wandering the beach at dusk again. Destiny and Preston joined me last summer to spend some time goofing around, cuddling, and just being their cute selves while we captured some memories at one of my personal favourite Toronto beaches. Cherry Beach can get pretty busy but on a weekday evening it's the perfect place to bring your pups and wander around. Not only is there plenty of greenery and beachy goodness, there's also a killer view of the Toronto skyline if you walk far enough down the beach. The best!

Destiny and Preston, two of my new favourite people, brought along their hilarious dogs to join in the celebration. I always love when my clients bring their pups to a session and these particular dogs were clearly very excited to be included. I have a couple of requests when folks bring their fur friends to a session, one being that a handler/human friend also joins us so that the dogs can head home (or on a walk) after we take a few photos with them. In this case we spent about 10 minutes or so with their pets and the couple handed them over to a friend, freeing us up to explore the area without two very excited puppers in tow lol!

We spent some time on the beach, swatting mosquitos in the trees, and of course enjoying that Toronto city view. The moon showed up as our session was ending (just after the sun dipped below the horizon) and it was the perfect way to wrap things up. Cherry Beach will always be an iconic spot to take photos (IMO) and I'm always down to head back. If you're looking for a location that blends nature and urban vibes I give it a 10/10. Take me with you if you go!

Evening Engagement Session at Toronto's Cherry Beach

Summer camp weddings have always felt so special to me, Nicola and Vanessa's wedding at Camp Kintail in Goderich, ON was no exception. This wedding was a particularly sweet day. Nicola and Vanessa adore each other and they shared a determination to create a day that was not only reflective of who they are, but of their deep love for their guests as well. Nicola and Vanessa are so warm and genuine, it was easy to fall in love with them immediately (even over Zoom). They care so deeply for their friends &amp; family and spent countless hours making sure their wedding was a testament to that love. Their choice to get married at Camp Kintail was perfect - it allowed them to not only get married in a stunning patch of nature but also to spend the entire weekend celebrating with the people they love the most. The efforts they went to make everyone feel special and important were evident throughout my time at Camp Kintail. Nicola &amp; Vanessa are truly wonderful humans and I'll hold this wedding day with extra special fondness in my memories.

There were dozens of special &amp; unique ways these amazing ladies made their day not only about them but also about community. One of the most touching parts of the day was the ceremony. Nicola and Vanessa had selected guests to share their own love stories, creating an intimate and personal atmosphere that truly set their wedding apart. Guests were fully present during the ceremony with no phones in sight. The absence of devices allowed everyone to fully engage in the moment, creating an intimate and connected experience that was truly special.

Vanessa &amp; Nicola made a point to steal away from their reception for a few minutes to capture some quiet moments together in their favourite spots at the camp. Of course, no wedding at Camp Kintail would be complete without mentioning the incredible sunset over the lake. The sight of Nicola and Vanessa, being their silly &amp; sweet selves in the glow of the setting sun was a moment I will always remember.

The day ended as it began: filled with love, laughter, and a sense of community that extended even to myself. Nicola and Vanessa's wedding was a celebration of not only their love for each other but also their love for their family and friends. It was a day that was truly as unique and special as they are, and it was an honour to be part of it. I'm so grateful for the experience and look forward to seeing where their journey takes them next. Here's to Nicola and Vanessa, and to a life filled with as much love and joy as was shared on their wedding day.

A Summer Camp Love Story: Nicola & Vanessa's Wedding

There was a time when I was apprehensive about shooting small, intimate weddings. I used to think, 'Will there be enough excitement, enough moments to capture?' But as I gained experience in the industry I realized that size doesn't matter. In fact, there's something extra special about a couple getting married with only their very closest friends &amp; family in attendance. Kathleen &amp; Adam's wedding at Two Sisters Vineyards, Niagara-on-the-Lake, was one of those extra special intimate days. Small weddings bring with them an abundance of warmth, love, and memorable moments that leave a lasting impression on my heart.

The venue, Two Sisters Vineyards, was absolutely stunning. Tucked away in the vineyards around Niagara-on-the-Lake, it was a perfect blend of elegance and natural beauty. The vineyards, the charming building with it's Tuscan vibes, the serene surroundings, everything was gorgeous and added a unique charm to Kathleen &amp; Adam's wedding.

As for Kathleen &amp; Adam, they were a joy to work with. Their love for each other was, and the excitement in their eyes was infectious. I could see the anticipation in Adam's eyes when I asked him how he felt about seeing his bride. He smiled, but his eyes conveyed a thousand emotions. It was a moment that set the tone for the rest of the day.

The best part of the wedding, without a doubt, was the relaxed vibe and focus on family time. With a small wedding party, every guest was a close family member or a friend, it felt so special to be among them. The love and happiness that filled the air were heartwarming. From shared laughter to tears of joy, the day was filled with beautiful moments that I was fortunate to capture.

Intimate Wedding at Two Sisters Vineyards | Kathleen & Adam

Every wedding is a unique story waiting to be captured, but Laura &amp; Trevor's special day in Toronto will forever remain etched in my heart. This wedding was such a sweet celebration of love, family, and unforgettable moments.
&nbsp;
I have to tell you something sad before we jump into this Toronto wedding story - the venue, Berkeley Church, is no longer. I know, it's a real bummer because this space is such an iconic Toronto landmark and we love a wedding in a historical building. I hope some rich artist (does that exist?) scoops it up and makes it into something amazing again and that it doesn't go the way of other Toronto buildings and become condos :s. Anyway... on with the show.

As a photographer, some of the best moments come from the unexpected, the unplanned. Laura and Trevor's first look in Liberty Village, Toronto was one of those moments. I'm such a fan of Liberty Village - it's packed with charm and interesting architecture not unlike some other Toronto spots that are far busier. Laura &amp; Trevor's first look wasn't without a couple of hiccups - we noticed halfway through that Laura (and the bridesmaids) had forgotten their flowers at the condo. Luckily someone saved the day and dropped them off. Glitches aside, it was an incredibly sweet &amp; special moment followed by some fun wedding party shots. This job is never boring!
&nbsp;
A wedding is not just about the couple, it's about two families coming together. Laura &amp; Trevor had friends and family join them from all over the US &amp; Canada. You'll notice in the photos below that I had a bit of a soft spot for Laura's grandad as well as her nieces &amp; nephews. Maybe I was a little homesick that day but for me, they were main characters in this wedding day story. There's something incredibly touching about watching simple interactions between loved ones on a wedding day, a quiet reminder of the bonds that tie us all together.
&nbsp;
One of the highlights for me was the unplugged ceremony. In an age where everyone is glued to their screens, it was refreshing to see guests fully present, living in the moment. The smiles, the teary eyes, the laughter - it was all so real and authentic, and made for some very special images.

As the night fell, the dance party began, and oh what a party it was! The energy was electric, the music infectious, and the dance floor was filled with joy and laughter. It was a fitting end to a day that was nothing short of magical.

Urban Toronto Wedding | Laura & Trevor

This wedding is a little bit of a throwback but as I'm digging through weddings that I haven't shared yet from the past couple of years Aleks and Wes's special day at the Portage Inn in Huntsville, Muskoka Ontario, was screaming to be posted. This wedding was actually from the first year of the pandemic and we weren't sure if it was going to move forward on time due to restrictions. Luckily, things loosened up enough for Aleks and Wes to host an intimate guest list of VIPs at this stunning venue. It ended up being such a perfect day, just looking back through their photos had me grinning and tearing up.

The Portage Inn served as a perfect backdrop for this gorgeous little wedding. Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Muskoka, this venue is a haven for romantic, intimate weddings. The rustic charm and timeless elegance of the inn truly made it another character in this wedding day story.

The couple's decision to keep their guest list intimate wasn't their original plan, but I believe it added a personal and cozy touch to the day. Every guest present held a special place in Aleks and Wes's hearts, which was evident in the warmth that radiated throughout the event. Having their nearest and dearest present to witness their union made the day even more special. I have to give a special shout-out to the wedding party - these folks might be one of my favourite groups I've had in recent years. They were funny, welcoming, and dang gorgeous. Thanks for including me in the fun everyone!

One of the highlights of the wedding was the couple's beloved dog joining the festivities. She was absolutely not a fan of my camera but I loved watching her antics as she raced around the Portage Inn's grounds. How special to have your best furry friend with you on your wedding day!

The wedding ceremony felt extra special in such a tough year. There were lots of happy tears shed, as Aleks and Wes said their vows and committed to each other. Any time raw emotions are evident it makes my little photographer heart extra happy - this is the thing we LOVE to see!

Aleks and Wes's wedding was a perfect blend of love, laughter, and tears. It might not have been the original wedding day they planned but I believe it was exactly as it was meant to be. Intimate Wedding at Portage Inn Muskoka

Weddings are always magical, but when set in a location as gorgeous as the Caledon Valley Estate Barn, the magic is turned up to eleven. Tucked away in the rolling hills of Caledon, Ontario, the venue was the perfect backdrop for Christina and Pier's wedding day.
 I absolutely adore this couple and their amazing families! Sharing their windy and sunny wedding day was so special. I had just shot a long wedding the day before and the moment I arrived at Caledon Valley Estate their energy completely revived me. There were so many thoughtful touches and traditions spread throughout the day.
 As guests arrived at Caledon Valley Estate for the wedding ceremony, a lively Mariachi band played adding to the festive atmosphere. The Mexican music tradition brought an element of cultural richness to the wedding, reflecting partof the groom's heritage and making the celebration even more special. The ceremony kicked off with the couple's adorable daughters walking down the aisle ahead of the bride. Christina &amp; Pier opted to forego a formal wedding party and instead incorporated their respective families and children into their special day.
Their ceremony also included another Mexican tradition of a wedding lasso ceremony which was performed by Christina &amp; Pier's Mothers. It was a really beautiful moment to witness such a special ritual signifying unity. Having their moms involved made it extra special.
Another deeply significant moment was when their fathers signed as their witnesses. This was not just a legal formality but also a symbol of the bond between the two families. The signing was a testament to their love and support for Christina and Pier, a moment that was both emotional and beautiful.

Christina and Pier's wedding was packed with love, family, and heritage. It was a day filled with beautiful moments, amazing energy, and SO MUCH MUSIC!! It was perfect. As a photographer, it was an honor to document this special day at the Caledon Valley Estate.

Jen couldn't have captured our wedding day at the Broadview Hotel more perfectly. She is such a fun and relaxed person, and fit right in with our wedding party and family. My husband Steven and I were totally blown away by our wedding pictures. There are soo many good shots...it's impossible for us to pick a favourite. We also loved that Jen not only sent a few sneak peak pictures a few days after the wedding but also spent the time to put together a slide show while the rest of our photos loaded. She updated us every step of the way so we were never left wondering when we would actually receive the pictures from our special day. We would highly recommend Jen to anyone looking to have a special moment in their life captured!

Nestled in the heart of Toronto, Ontario, The Broadview Hotel played host to one of the most memorable weddings I've had the privilege to photograph - the intimate celebration of Jamie and Erik's wedding. This gorgeous evening was part 2 of Jamie &amp; Erik's wedding as they were legally married in 2020 when their guest list had to be curated to the extreme and their party vibes were seriously limited.

As a photographer, my job is to tell a story through images, and this story was a joy to capture. From the moment I arrived, The Broadview Hotel's aesthetic and energy delivered as it always does. With its architectural charm and vintage elegance, it provided the perfect backdrop for Jamie and Erik's special day.
&nbsp;
The decor was one of the highlights of this wedding. Unique florals, soft lighting, lush greenery, and attention to detail created an atmosphere that was both romantic and inviting. It was clear that Jamie and Erik had put their heart and soul into making their day as beautiful as possible.
&nbsp;
But the best part of the wedding was undoubtedly the couple's decision to spend as much time as possible enjoying the day. They mingled with their guests, tasted the excellent food, and danced the night away. Jamie and Erik understood that their wedding wasn't about posing for endless photos, but about celebrating with the people they love the most.

As the night drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel privileged to have been a part of Jamie and Erik's special day. Their wedding was a beautiful testament to their love for each other, and I'm sure it will be a day they'll remember for the rest of their lives. As a photographer, being able to capture these moments is the ultimate reward.

Welcome to the enchanting wedding day of Sarah and Travis, a day filled with love, warmth, and so much joy. The stage was set for their magical day in the heart of 100 Acre Wood in Picton, Ontario, an idyllic venue that perfectly encapsulated the essence of their love story.

The day began with Sarah and Travis deciding to do a first look allowing them to see each other for the first time on their wedding day, away from the eyes of their guests. It was a touching moment, one filled with raw emotion and pure love. Their first look was followed by a private vow reading, which was incredibly heartfelt and beautiful to witness.

What made this moment even more special was the signing of their marriage license in advance allowing Sarah's twin sister to officiate the ceremony, adding an intimate and personal touch to their wedding day. It was a testament to the bond between the sisters and a beautiful way to involve family in their special day.

But for me what truly set their wedding day apart was the time Sarah and Travis spent with their children throughout the day. Their commitment to making their children a significant part of their special day was evident. From involving them in the ceremony to ensuring they were part of every special moment, it was heartwarming to see a family so united in love.

Prince Edward County's 100 Acre Wood provided an enchanting backdrop to their day, with its lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere. As the sun began to set, the venue transformed into a fairy tale setting, with a bon fire illuminating the natural beauty of the surroundings.

A Magical Wedding Day at 100 Acre Wood: Sarah & Travis

OOOOOOFFFfffff&hellip; this wedding. THIS WEDDING! Where do I start with this gorgeous beast? First of all, let me say that this wasn&rsquo;t just a wedding, Ali &amp; John made sure that their Ontario Forest Wedding was an experience for their guests. They made sure to include so many of the things they love: their puppy, hiking, food, and of course nature, into their special 2020 wedding day. As I&rsquo;ve mentioned many times, 2020 was an extremely difficult year for our industry and our clients &ndash; but wow, if you were an optimist and able to find a silver lining&hellip; you could throw a damn amazing wedding. This particular forest wedding was tucked into a grove of trees on Ali&rsquo;s family property near Shelburne, Ontario. Naturally, I can&rsquo;t disclose the location but if this is the sort of vibe you&rsquo;re looking for, scroll to the very bottom and I&rsquo;ll give you some ideas for venues.
 Ali &amp; John wanted to make sure that their intimate guest list had an experience to remember. This included a stunning tent for a welcome champagne, a leisurely hike down a wooded path with the story of their romance lining the way, a beautiful ceremony in the trees, a special tree planting ceremony, a cocktail hour laden with flowers, and one of the most romantic table-scapes I&rsquo;ve ever seen. Let&rsquo;s not forget live music, something we&rsquo;d all been sorely missing!
 We had rain, wind, sun, and mud&hellip; so much mud&hellip; but I wouldn&rsquo;t trade my blisters &amp; soggy shoes in for the world. This may be one of my top 5 weddings of all time. Ok, enough talking, here you go &ndash; Ali &amp; John&rsquo;s Ontario Forest Wedding, a highlight of 2020.

Winter weddings used to terrify me.  The thought of bad roads, being cold (and possibly wet), plus the short daylight hours just didn’t appeal to me.  I avoided winter weddings big time.  Enter this Elora Mill Wedding – one I welcomed with open arms and was actually thrilled about photographing.  Elora Mill Weddings are actually a fairly new thing – this absolutely stunning historic venue has only been offering wedding collections since summer 2018.  I can confidently say that those of us in the Southern Ontario Wedding Industry are extremely thrilled about having such a gorgeous new space to work in!

 Erin & Nick came to me via another fantastic GTA Wedding Photographer and friend, Jenny Thompson (she’s amazing – check her out here).  Direct referrals are always my very favourite because great people tend to travel in packs.  Jenny did NOT let me down with this referral and I hope the feeling is mutual for this lovely couple.

 My time with Erin & Nick began at their beautiful home near Elora.  The guys were ready to party, Nick was ready to see his girl.  I asked him how he was feeling about seeing Erin and he actually told me he couldn’t talk about it for fear of bursting into happy tears.  What a way to set the tone for the day!!!  I made my way to Erin & her ladies who were getting ready at a beautiful little space on the Elora Mill Hotel grounds called the James Ross House.  She welcomed me with a huge hug, smile, and the BEST energy.  Her excitement couldn’t be contained as she got dressed and watched through a window as Nick arrived.  The good vibes just kept coming!

A romantic first look session in the Spa’s yoga room overlooking Elora Gorge was the perfect way to officially launch the wedding’s events.  I don’t think I could have dreamed of a better moment to photograph or space to do so.  A HUGE thank you to the Elora Mill Hotel & Spa’s co-ordination team and staff for making sure we were so well taken care of.

I really hope you enjoy peeking through these images – lord knows we had an amazing time creating them.  Thank you, thank you, thank you to Erin & Nick for a wonderful day that truly filled up my cup.  I think the world of you and hope our paths cross again soon! xo
